God how I wish he had played his entire career in America....as much as I love the Reds I wish that Pete Rose did not hold the all time hits record. That guy is an embarrassment. + Ichiro faced juiced up pitchers for most of the 00's and played on some down right incompetent teams.

This a very good story about the upside of Justin Jackson. I love watching this guy play ball! Great passer, great hustle, great passion, very good shot blocker, not afraid, very smart player with great athleticism. I think of him as Kenyon Martin meets, Jeff Green, meets Greg Monroe type player. Not saying that he will be as good as any of them, but that he has some attributes of all of those players, and if he continues to improve his ball handling and strength, I can see him as an undrafted, off the bench, towel waving, hustle guy in the association.
I'm putting the over/under at 10, and taking the over on the number of fans, at Wrigley this year, with Cubs jerseys with Pujols over #5 on the back. There is some quality hate between those 2 fan bases, and I would love to see it esplode if Albert somehow found his way to the North side. As a fan of the Reds I would love to see him take his talents to the AL.
If wining is not important to you, think about becoming a fan of the Bengals. It is never boring thanks to our incompetent GM and his sycophantic minions.

Early peeps, grunting in their caves, about the weather, or whatever, would surely marvel about the evolution of the modern humans ability to complain. With the explosive growth in both obtaining information and the many ways to communicate said info. it is truly a Golden Age of Complaining and will only increase. That being said, if there were half-assed blogs like this one 50, 100, or 150 years ago the same observation could be made and be just as accurate.

NCAA Requires Loss of Contests for Six Ohio State Football Student-Athletes

For Immediate Release: Thursday, December 23, 2010

INDIANAPOLIS--- Five football student-athletes from The Ohio State University must sit out the first five games of the 2011 season for selling awards, gifts and university apparel and receiving improper benefits in 2009, the NCAA has determined.

A sixth football student-athlete must sit out the first game in 2011 for receiving discounted services in violation of NCAA rules.

The violations fall under the NCAA's preferential treatment bylaws.

In addition to missing five games next season, student-athletes Mike Adams, Daniel Herron, Devier Posey, Terrelle Pryor and Solomon Thomas must repay money and benefits ranging in value from $1,000 to $2,500. The repayments must be made to a charity.

Student-athlete Jordan Whiting must sit out the first game next year and pay $150 to a charity for the value of services that were discounted because of his status as a student-athlete.

"These are significant penalties based on findings and information provided by the university," said Kevin Lennon, NCAA vice president of academic and membership affairs.

The decision from the NCAA student-athlete reinstatement staff does not include a withholding condition for the Allstate Sugar Bowl. The withholding condition was suspended and the student-athletes will be eligible to play in the bowl game Jan. 4 based on several factors.

These include the acknowledgment the student-athletes did not receive adequate rules education during the time period the violations occurred, Lennon said.

NCAA policy allows suspending withholding penalties for a championship or bowl game if it was reasonable at the time the student-athletes were not aware they were committing violations, along with considering the specific circumstances of each situation. In addition, there must not be any competitive advantage related to the violations, and the student-athletes must have eligibility remaining.

The policy for suspending withholding conditions for bowl games or NCAA championship competition recognizes the unique opportunity these events provide at the end of a season, and they are evaluated differently from a withholding perspective. In this instance, the facts are consistent with the established policy, Lennon said.

Gene Smith, associate vice president and director of athletics at Ohio State, said the university will "further enhance" its rules education in the future based on this situation.

"We were not as explicit with our student-athlete education as we should have been in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic years regarding the sale of apparel, awards and gifts issued by the athletics department," Smith said. "We began to significantly improve our education in November of 2009 to address these issues. After going through this experience, we will further enhance our education for all our student-athletes as we move forward."

The standard withholding condition in cases like these involving the five student-athletes is four games, or 30 percent of a season. A fifth game was added to the penalty because these student-athletes did not immediately disclose the violations when presented with the appropriate rules education, Lennon said.

"Once a student-athlete understands a violation has occurred, they must immediately come forward to report it," he said. "That did not happen, so the additional one-game penalty was imposed."

The university declared the student-athletes ineligible on Monday (Dec. 20) and requested reinstatement from the NCAA.

As part of their reinstatement:

Adams must repay $1,000 for selling his 2008 Big Ten championship ring
Herron must repay $1,150 for selling his football jersey, pants and shoes for $1,000 and receiving discounted services worth $150
Posey must repay $1,250 for selling his 2008 Big Ten championship ring for $1,200 and receiving discounted services worth $50
Pryor must repay $2,500 for selling his 2008 Big Ten championship ring, a 2009 Fiesta Bowl sportsmanship award and his 2008 Gold Pants, a gift from the university
Solomon (Thomas) must repay $1,505 for selling his 2008 Big Ten championship ring for $1,000, his 2008 Gold Pants for $350 and receiving discounted services worth $155.
During the reinstatement process, each case is evaluated based on the specific facts of the particular case by NCAA staff. Prior to reaching a decision, staff considers any guidelines established by the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement, a student-athlete's responsibility for the violation, as well as any mitigating factors presented by the institution.

The university can appeal the decision to the Division I NCAA Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement, an independent committee comprised of representatives from NCAA member colleges, universities and athletic conferences. This committee can reduce or remove the condition, but it cannot increase the staff-imposed conditions.

Reinstatement decisions are independent of the NCAA enforcement process and typically are made once the facts of the student-athlete's involvement are determined. The reinstatement process is likely to conclude prior to the close of an enforcement investigation. It is NCAA policy not to comment on current, pending or potential investigations.

I have been known to experience earworms from time to time but this latest one is approaching 3 weeks in duration. Pretty much the most severe episode I have ever encountered. It started, innocently enough, while driving the family hauler, listening to the local radio station that promises "we'll play anything" to which I usually add, "as long as it sucks."
Anywho, it was beautiful early spring evening, sunny and warm, windows down sunroof open, wind in my bald, when I heard the synth intro. I recognized it immediately. Survivor with their not quite biggest hit, "High on You." Mullet driven, hard rock pop, ballad mid 80's hell/kitchy smarmy trash. Or MDHRPBM80'SH/KST for short.
That damn thing has been lodged inside my dome ever since, first thing in the morning, when I wake from sleep for that half wooden, half asleep trip to the bathroom. While running, while at work, while typing this crap.
I once, about 7 years ago had a horrible run of Billy Joel earworms, mostly "Uptown Girl," "Allentown," the song a bottle " a bottle of red..." whatever that is, and "Still Rock and Roll to me" But that now seems like a small creak compared to the mighty Mississippi that torment/entertains me day and night churning through my ears with line like, " I'm higher than a kite I know I'm getting hooked on your love." and "I'm screaming in the night I know I'm getting hooked on your love." and da Na na na Na na (wanker guitar hook)

He wanted to express his love and admiration for Aroldis Chapman. He was riding the buzz create as details of Chapman’s spring debut flowed over the web. I usually try to curb his enthusiasm a bit when he gets worked up about his beloved Reds.

But I didn’t this time.

After nine losing season and an absolutely abysmal record of developing starting pitchers, I say: Dream big, Reds fans.

Chapman is a 100 mph throwing left-handed starter. The list of those begins and ends with Randy Johnson.

I’m not saying Chapman is going to be Randy Johnson, but he has a chance to be great.

In the five times I’ve seen him throw, I’ve seen nothing but good things.

So, again: Dream big, Reds fans.

Brent Musberger and Kirk Herbstriet should be announcing the the BCS bowl game tonight, how ABC butchered this plan, not by installing another one of their college football broadcast teams, but by putting their Monday Night Football announcers, and then leaving out the good color guy, is beyond me.
Gruden provides little insight on MNF, now he is going to explain the intricacies of College football? I think not.
Chris Collinsworth will explain how a receiver cut his rout short, or how the fullback picked up a blitz, or how a tackle maintained his block. Gruden will say, "That's a great throw." I could go on with these type of made up examples, but I'm lazy, and you've got things to do. And, you know I'm right.

Also, Alabama will Roll.
1. Tougher schedule 2. Better Coach 3. 2 great running backs 4. Julio Jones is a SUPER STUD! 5. Better Special Teams 6. Better offensive line 7. Better D-fence 8. Let's go to the trusty memory-bank, not the interwebs, thereby insuring two things.

Oscar wasn't allowed to play his freshman season.
Roger McClendon was a better shooter, but couldn't create, handle or rebound like Lance.
Herb Jones wasn't a freshman for his first year here, same for Pete Mikeal
Kenyon wasn't Kenyon his freshman year, he something all together different and more terrifying. His line usually look something like this. 4 points on 2 dunks, 4 rebounds, 4 blocks, 4 fouls and 4 turnovers in 4 minutes.
Steve Logan was no where near the first team All-American he would mature into.
Dermarr, Dontonio, and (point guard from NY city whose name I can't remember and I'm not going looking for it) were three of the most hyped....got it, Kenny Satterfield.(thanks Blair) players ever to be recruited to UC. None of them could hold Lance's jock.
So that leaves Danny Fortson, the baby-faced Beast. It was over if he got the ball on the low block, great hands, great rebounder. He was option #1 the moment he arrived on campus.
To settle this debate we will have to wait to compare at the end of the season. So for now be content that he( Lance ) is having at least the second greatest Freshman season ever in the history of UC mens b-ball. Enjoy. Because there may never be anyone better. And he may only be at UC for one season. But where would he fit in the NBA. Sounds like a topic for another post. Until Happy New Year everyone (all 3 of you)!!

Mike Mussina Had a Better Career Than Tom Glavine
Mike Mussina was a better pitcher than Tom Glavine. Mike Mussina announced that he has made his last major league pitch, while Tom Glavine filed for free agency on November 5 and is not sure whether he will be able to return from elbow surgery. Statistically, Mike Mussina tops Tom Glavine in EVERY major category, except career wins. Glavine has won 305 games while Mussina has won 270, but during his eighteen year career, Mussina averaged 17 wins a season. In his twenty two year career, Glavine averaged 15 wins a season. While Mussina won as many as 20 games only once, he never won fewer than 11 games in a season. Glavine won at least 20 games in five different seasons, but he won only 7 games while losing 17 his second season, and Tom won only 9 games his first year with the Mets. Mike Mussina has a winning percentage of .638 compared to Tom Glavine's .600.

Mike Mussina Tops Tom Glavine

Mike Mussina compiled a 3.68 ERA during his career, compared to the American League's 4.51. Tom Glavine's lifetime ERA is 3.54 compared to the National League's 4.16, but those numbers do not account for the fact that Mussina faced designated hitters while Glavine faced pitchers or a pinch hitter. Mussina's ERA+ is 123, compared to Glavine's 118. With respect to WHIP (walks + hits divided by innings pitched), Mussina's 1.192 tops Glavine's 1.314. Finally, Mussina averaged 178 strikeouts and 49 walks a season compared to Glavine's 129 strikeouts and 74 walks.

Mike Mussina's Greatest Pitching Moment

Tom Glavine has been in five World Series. While the Braves won only in 1995, Glavine contributed tremendously to that championship, winning Game 2 against the Indians and then winning a 1-0 shut out in Game 6 to end the Series. Mussina has NEVER won a World Series game. The two years he helped the Yankees get to the World Series -- 2001 and 2003 -- they lost each time. Mussina recently said that his greatest moment occurred in the second round of the 2003 playoffs against the Red Sox in Game 7. With the Yankees trailing, 4-0. Mussina came in with runners on first and third and no outs. He struck out Jason Varitek and got Johnny Damon on a double play grounder to keep the deficit at four runs. Tom Glavine's Losing Seasons

Mike Mussina lost more games than he won only in his first season. He joined the Orioles in August, 1991, started 12 games, and went 4-5. Tom Glavine has lost more games than he won in SIX different seasons, including 7-17 in 1988, 9-14 in 2003, and 11-14 in 2004. While it is generally agreed that a pitcher's won-lost record often is not an accurate measure of a pitcher's effectiveness, that fact is often ignored when 300 career wins are used as an automatic ticket into the Hall of Fame.

Tom Glavine Never Dominated

There are pitchers in the Hall of Fame who had short, dominant careers, such as Addie Joss, Dizzy Dean, and Sandy Koufax. Others, such as Don Sutton and Ferguson Jenkins, had long careers, were solid pitchers, but never dominated their leagues. Mike Mussina and Tom Glavine were similar to Sutton and Jenkins. They did not have the dominance of Sandy Koufax or Dizzy Dean, and most purists believe that neither Mike Mussina nor Tom Glavine was a Hall of Fame pitcher. Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux, Curt Schilling, John Smoltz, Johan Santana and Josh Beckett dominated. All were or are superior to Mussina and Glavine. In the Braves' "glory days," Glavine was no more than the THIRD best pitcher on the pitching staff

Is Tom Glavine a Hall of Famer?

With news that Tom Glavine has a possible blood clot in his shoulder which could result in the end of his season and possibly his career, I thought it appropriate to ask whether he belongs in the Hall of Fame. Of course, that raises the general question “What makes a player worthy of enshrinement?,” the answer to which is too often a very good, but not great, career. In my book, to get a Hall pass, you must either be a 4th grader who has to take a leak or a professional athlete who is one of the best, not only of his generation, but ever, at his position. Since Glavnie has used up his eligibility as a 4th grader, let’s take a look at whether he qualifies for his pitching.

Overall, Glavine is a very good pitcher. He has won 287 games versus 190 defeats, for a very solid .602 winning percentage. He has a career ERA of 3.46, and a WHIP (walks + hits divided by innings pitched) of a solid 1.31. He has 2,453 strikeouts. All good numbers, but are they good enough for the Hall pass. Let’s compare him versus some of his contemporaries who are likely and/or possible candidates for the Hall….

While Glavine’s numbers are very good, they do not compare with any of these other pitchers, with the exception of Schilling, who was a reliever for part of his career, iptched for some bad Phillies teams, did not blossom until later than the others, and is a marginal Hall of Famer at best. Even when compared to a steady but not spectacular pitcher like Mike Mussina, Glavine does not have as good a winning percentage (Mussina’s is .642) or WHIP (1.18). He does have a slightly better ERA (3.64), but I would attribute more than the difference to Mussina’s pitching his whole career in the AL while Glavine has thrown exclusively in the NL.

But let’s not stop there. Let’s compare Glavine to Bert Blyleven, one of the best pitchers of the 1970’s and 1980’s who has come up just short of Hall inclusion year after year. Ironically, Blylven and Glavine have won the same # of games (287), although I give Glavine the edge when handicapping who is more likely to break the tie. Blyleven lost significantly more games than Glavine (250 vs. 190), resulting in a relatively poor winning percentage of .534 for the Twins announcer. Surprisingly, Blyleven actually had a better career ERA of 3.31 vs. 3.46, although I will call that a draw based on higher run scoring in recent years. B-squared also had a significant better WHIP of 1.198, and a superior 3:1 stikeout to walk ration (versus less than 2:1 for Glavine). Overall, these guys are fairly similar, with a slight edge to Glavine for better winning percentage and pitching to similar numbers in a more difficult era for pitchers.

Another measure that is considered for Hall enshrinement (and rightfully so) is how did a player fare in important spots. Glavine has the reputation of stepping up in big spots because he came up huge in Game 6 versus the Indians when the Braves clinched with a 1-0 victory. However, Glavine actually has a below .500 record (12-15, .444) in 32 playoff starts, with a 3.58 ERA. These numbers were surprisingly poor to me, although he does get points for basically delivering the Braves one and only title in an underachieving decade long run.

When you look at the intangibles, I give Glavine kudos for two things. One, I give him some points for his excellent “Chicks Dig the Long Ball” Nike spot with Greg Maddux, which is even more amusing now that we know Mark McGwire was a wretched cheater (to watch the spot, click here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRs60GZ1q1o). Also, I was watching a Phillies/Braves game back when Glavine had 191 wins (no idea why I remember that win total!), and dumb Skip Caray asked Glavine if he wanted to be in the Hall of Fame one day. Most athletes have been trained to answer that with a “take one day at a time” cliché, but Glavine looked right in the camera, and simply said “yes.” I though that candor from an athlete was refreshing. One more thing in Glavine’s favor: he was tough enough to be drafted in the 4th round of the NHL draft by the L.A. Kings.

Finally, one question I always ask before submitting my imaginary HOF ballot is “Did the player invoke fear in his opponents?” The answer to that question in Glavine’s case, in my opinion, is an unequivocal NO. His best pitch was always his change up (not like Cole Hamels, who has a great fastball and nasty curve to go along with his great change!), and he just seems to do it with great control, OK stuff, and always getting that call 6 inches off the plate.

In a nutshell, Tom Glavine was a very good pitcher who pitched on very good teams, and I wish the Phillies would have had him all these years instead of division foes. But he was not the best of the best, so if I had a vote to Cooperstown, I would not write his name on the ballot, even if he does limp to 300 wins. I just do not think he was quite good enough. That being said, I think he is likely in today with the real writers, and a lock if he gets 13 more wins. Which I guess goes to show you that they are giving too many passes, kind of like those 4th grade teachers…..

I spent the last four weeks traveling to promote my book. During that time, I stayed in nine different hotel rooms. All of them had wireless. In three of the rooms, I noticed a strange phenomenon -- my connection would be fast during the day, but at night, it became so spotty that I could barely load box scores or watch even short highlight clips. On Wednesday night in Portland, the wireless was so terrible that it took me 15 minutes to watch a 4-minute clip from that night's "The Ruins." I finally gave up. The following morning, the connection miraculously worked again and I was able to watch the clip.

That's when I came up with "The Porn Jammer" theory: It's my belief that certain hotels scramble their wireless at night to discourage guests from surfing for porn. Why? So they will order adult entertainment from the hotel's pay-per-view system. I know... it's dastardly. But if you're the hotel, why give the milk away for free when you can make people pay for the cow? More importantly, would you really put it past them? This is the same business that built motion detectors into mini-bars; they're going to give up the in-room porn business without a fight? It's evil, it's desperate, it's despicable and brilliant. The Porn Jammer is my Great Call of the Week.

They're was a great "30 for 30" last week about the Jimmy the Greek, and at the end of the Greek's life he was unkempt and broke and wandering around Las Vegas begging. He revolutionized sports gambling, yet in the end, he was kicked out of casinos, a total loser. Kind of like all-time college football total wins leader, U of M. Jesus Michigan, pull yourself together. This use to be the greatest week of the year, now, ehhh. I mean, we'll kick your ass, but what's the fun in that. It's only a rivalry when both teams are competitive.

Story here about the Buckeyes D-Line. I would like to add something that was neglected in this story. The depth on the D-Line is greater than on any unit in the past 40 years. Robert Rose and Lawrence Wilson would start on all but 2-4(Fla, Bama, Texas - maybe, and USC - maybe) teams in the country. Local gridioner Todd Denlinger filled in admirably for Dexter Larimore while he was injured. Freshman John Simon has contributed with steady, mistake-free football. That's one kick ass unit that goes 8 deep.

One of my main gripes with ESPN are crappy highlight packages. Last night's first quarter between the Cavs and Heat was one entire highlight and the way ESPN news cut it up this morning, then moved to the fourth quarter was disgusting. More highlights, less talking, please!

-This handsome young man is the most valuable player on offense. Carson, Chad, and Ced will be in the pro-bowl but Kyle Cook has had an immense impact on the team's ability to run and pass block.
-Best move by the front office, Cutting Brad St. Louis. I don't know the name of the long snapper, and that's the way it should be.
-Worst move by the front office, besides not hiring a G.M., not trading for a tight end.
-Defensive MVPerson, Mike Zimmer. Johnathan Joseph is the best player on D, and deserves Pro-Bowl consideration. Leon Hall is good/very good. Morgan Trent as the third d-back has been a revelation. Linebackers and D-Line have played smart, aggressive, and physical football for the first time since 1988
This team can run and pass, stop the run and the pass, and is solid/decent on specials. It has been a joy to watch this team, with some incredible last minute wins, and unless they befall numerous and serious injuries, should make it into the playoffs.

I have had Terrelle's back all season, I had tremendous expectations of him coming into this season, he is an effective qb at the major D1 level right now, but last week against powerhouse New Mexico State, I through up my hands in disgust while cursing and leaving the room before I did something awful to my sweet baby (plasma) and two young children.
First quarter, 0-0, 3rd and 4, Terrelle nervously and quickly throws over the middle to someone (don't remember who, not important) on a shallow crossing pattern. He never looked at another receiver (nothing unusual about that) he didn't wait for the play to set up he just got rid of the ball ASAP. He did throw the ball on target and in rhythm to his receiver, unfortunately for the Buckeyes, it was a one yard pass with plenty of Aggies in the vicinity who promptly tacked said receiver for a two yard game.
On comes the punting team.
If this play would have happened against USC, or Penn State I wouldn't have though twice about it, but it wasn't. It was New Mexico State one of the worst teams and worst programs in College Football. The fact that Terrelle could not keep his composure against a team that is smaller, slower, and less skilled than some elite (danger, sight exaggeration ahead) high school programs is absolutely disheartening.
Terrelle is going to need at least SIX to SEVEN more years of eligibility in Tresselville to even have a fair shot at becoming a starting quaterback in the NFL.
Crap and double Crap. I still am rooting for Terrelle, and it's not his fault that he was rated so highly coming out of high school, and the O-line did play horribly against Purdue, but my plasma is sleeping with one eye open for the time being.

Catchy title eh?

Big game in Fresno last Friday night. The students, fans, and alumni wanted to show their support by dressing up in unison. A white-out was ordered, and executed to perfection, one problem though, the bulldogs came out wearing red from tip to toe, visiting Boise St. wearing all white.

Ohio St. winning 21-0 in the second quarter, on Toledo's three yard line. At the least we are going up 24-0. After 2 running attempts that did not result in a touchdown, Ohio State "fans" started booing. I know I said Terrelle's post game comments after the Navy game were embarrassing, but that was one 19 year old kid, whose words did not match what he was feeling, 3,000 " adult fans" booing a bunch of kids that are WINNING THE GAME 21-0 is inexcusable and embarrassing and redneck and short tempered and disappointing and unsophisticated and regrettable and disheartening and upsetting and sickening.

Barry Schwartz came within one and a half measly points from winning a 10 play football card that would have won him 3000 large. He had the over in the Steelers/Bears game, now that I think about it, he might have had the Steelers as well, ( I was yelling at my kids and my wife was yelling at me and Barry had been enjoying the awesome Bengal action down at the local) Either way 8 0r 9 out of 10 in the NFL is great days work.

Never. And with Ohio State stealing defeat from the jaws of victory yet again ( Texass, Penn St. ) I am forced to take away something besides the elation a win would have provided. I thought the players looked as fast and as big as USC. Something I did not expect to see. So even though the dejection is palpable I feel much better about the program going forward than I did after the win against Navy.

We have lost 2 of last 3 games, to top five teams, in the games final seconds, truly agonizing defeats.

Daniel " Bum " not " Boom " (correctly dubbed by my father-in-law) Herron is completely average and is a long, long, very long ways away from his predecessor.

This set of starting linebackers are completely average, I don't see any of them ever getting any kind of significant playing time at the next level.

I really like the Sears Brett Farve commercial.

After staying in a third hotel in a month ( I will, and have, gone years without staying in a hotel ) I really wish someone would open a chain of Hotels for germ-o-phobes like me. Where all the sheets, towels, blankets, etc. would be sterilized in an laundry autoclave. No carpet or rugs. Steam clean the floors and use hospital quality sanitizer everyday in every room. A sanitized bed cover over the matress and box springs would be nice. This is a can't miss.

Duron Carter, pictured above, should have caught the ball, even though he was triple covered, as the buckeyes were trying to get to into game tying field goal range at the end of the game.

To me, it was the loudest Ohio Stadiun has ever sounded on television.

As much as I love and defend and respect coach Vest(I tried to get my wife to at least consider the possibility of naming our first son Tress (no dice)) I have to disagree with this thought process.
I understand wanting to get Bauserman snaps with the first team, please don't do it in the first quarter of the first game.
What if
1. The offense is stagnate or turns the ball over the first couple of drives
2. The O scores on the second or third series, you are then going to bring in the backup? Destroying the mo?
3. The O-line sucks and we need a mobile qb?

Please let him start the first drive of the fourth quarter, then the third, fourth, or fifth series against Toledo.

After cashing in their collective chips on the 2009 season by losing 3 out of 4 to the pitiful San Diego Padres, the Reds parlayed that anti-momentum into a 3 game sweep at the hands of the Colorado Rockies. One note of interest that occurred to me while listening Jeff Brantley destroy the English language and say, " right down Broadway " 16 times in two innings was, Is Todd Helton HOF worthy? He feels like a no, his numbers say yes. His most productive season happened in the early aughts, the heart of the steroid era, which raises questions about him juicing. Which raises questions about his numbers which are his strongest argument for a plaque hanging in Cooperstown.

Forever linked after a trade between the Rangers and the Reds in December of 2007 it seems to me their careers have traveled upon eerily similar paths these past 2 seasons.
April and May of 2008 Hamilton hit .333 and .332 and was name Player of the Month in both months and according to wiki, " to become the first American League player in baseball history to be awarded Player of the Month for the first two months of the season."
In his first nine starts of 2008, Volquez was 7-1 with a staggeringly low 1.33 era.
Both easily made the ALL-STAR game, and both made impacts. Josh in the home run contest and Edinson in the game, where he gave up a game tying 2 run bomb to J.D. Drew*
Both finished the season with sensational numbers, Volquez was 17-6 with a 3.21, Hamilton led the AL with 130 rib-eye steaks, and hit .304 with 32 homers. Both did it in the same fashion, torrid first half, cool second half. Volquez was 12-3 @ the ALL-STAR break with a 2.29 era and among the league leaders in strike-outs. He was 5-3 post ALL-STAR break with era's of 4.54,4.50,and 4.09 in July, August, and September. Josh Hamilton had 95 rbi's** and 21 dingers prior to the 2008 ALL-STAR game and 21 rbi's with 11 round-trippers post.
Both have laid turds in the 2009 season. Both have been on the Disabled List twice this season, the second time within a day of each other. Hamilton is hitting .240 with 6 hr's and 24 rbi's in 35 games. Volquez is 4-2 with a 4.35 era. Neither will be participating in this year's ALL-STAR game. I don't know if they will, but hopefully they will be back next year, and following eight after that. What I do know is that if I were either Volquez or Hamilton I would be rooting like hell for the other to win the lottery.
*J.D. Drew was an all-star?????

Rebounding from a horrible loss on Sunday the Reds cruised into D.C. after a day off and won the first two of a three game set from the dismal "Natinals." These two wins were huge in the fact that this is the first time this season that the Reds are playing a team that they should beat. Not easy for a young team to do. A series loss the the most pathetic team in baseball combined with the futility displayed this past Sunday @ GABP could have sent this young team down a path they could not have recovered from.

I rarely comment about the Video of the Week, but I find this week's edition fascinating. It so perfectly captures the time it was filmed, 1980, and the stoner rock concert scene. The crowds hair, the lead singers beard and white fro' and his satin jacket with the sleeves pushed up and red silk TANK TOP!! Double exclamation points!! The song itself has one of the great hooks of all time in rock music. You will be hearing it in your head the rest of the day, and rightly so. The lead guitarist brown vest moustache combo is sensational as well as his guitar chops. There is a bass solo, and a drum solo, triggered to strobe lights!! double, double exclamation points!!* And the best/worst feature of this whole production is some dude with a giant Godzilla head standing behind the drummer!! I emailed my cousin earlier in the day. He is a life long Pirates fan, and I was thinking I should have included something in the email about the Pirates, more specifically how I wish they would just give up all ready, thereby helping out my Reds team. After 47 minutes of not falling asleep, I decided to watch some TV. Turned on ESPN news and within 5 minutes saw the story that Pittspuke traded there all-star center fielder Nate McLouth. My wish came true! Now, for the real meat of this post. How did the Bucos react? Slam doors? Cuss out the manager?

In no particular order.
1. He was the never the ace on any team he was on, ever.*
2. Since he was never the #1 on any staff, his rotation was set up so he did not have to face other team's best pitchers.
3. He doesn't pass the sniff test. I say Ken Griffey Jr., you say no doubt, first ballot HOFer. I say Randy Johnson or Pedro you say Hall of Fame. I say Tom Glavine, you say ehhh.
4. Ask a manager from the 90's to pick one pitcher to
a. start a team with
b. win one game and you can pick any pitcher in baseball.
No one picks Tom Glavine.
5. No one benefited more from the Eric Gregg strike zone (4-6 inches outside to right-handers) more than Mr. Glavine. Javier Lopez would set up outside. Glavine threw directly into his mitt. Lopez never moved then framed it. Strike one. But wait a minute, that pitch was three inches outside. How he got away with that same crappy trick start after start is not his fault, and I give him credit for using it to his advantage however, if he came to the bigs sometime during or after 2003, after the initiation of Questech, I cannot imagine he would have the same success. He was 63-60from 2003-2008. Pretty good? Yes. HOF good? No way.
6. He played on the best team in the regular season in the National League for 12 consecutive seasons. Again, not his fault, but his numbers are inflated because of it.
Put John Smoltz or Gregg Maddux, two bona-fide HOFers with Maddux being a no doubt first ballot entry, on the K.C. Royals or the Pittsburgh Pirates during the 90's up through the 00's and their numbers would be a little different but their career's in baseball would still have the same end point, Cooperstown. If Tom Glavine played for the Baltimore Orioles throughout the 90's and into this decade there would a very, very small chance that he would be enshrined in the hall.
7. He has one thing going for him. One. He won three hundred + games. A testimony more to his longevity and the teams he played for than his individual talent. No one has ever won 300 or more games and been left out. He should be the first.
8. Tom Glavine was a good/very good player for a long time but that is not what the baseball Hall of Fame is for. The Hall of Fame in baseball is for the best of the best, not the best of the good.

* He was the ace of the NY Mets in 2003 and 2004, before they acquired Pedro Martinez, and went 9-14 and 11-14 in those 2 seasons.
